April 2021 e-Bulletin

Welcome to the April 2021 NYC e-bulletin

The Frostbite competitive cruise

Frostbite Challenge Sunday 9th May 2021.

Start time 10.00am off Newhaven - please email commodore@newhavenyc.org.uk  if you might be interested for further details and updates nearer the date.

We had a good turnout last time we ran this (in August 2020) and it was a great day - let's try and repeat this.

A warm welcome to this April edition of the NYC

Finally, the boating season has arrived (not sure about the weather), but hopefully it will catch up.

Just a quick update from me on our plans for the early part of the year. The committee have been busily meeting during lockdown to plan skills forums and sailing events (subject, of course, to government restrictions). More details are in this bulletin, but don’t forget the skills forum featuring the Sailhaven project on Weds 21 April.

Our first sailing events are the (rescheduled) Frostbite competitive cruise from Newhaven to the Portobello Buoy and back, on Sunday 9th May. If you haven’t tried this before, have a go – it’s a great day. A reminder that our first rally is to Eastbourne, at the second Bank Holiday in May.

Now that the lockdown is easing and there is a little more certainty (hopefully), your committee are finalising the sailing programme for the season, and more details will follow soon. Also, we’ve been taking the opportunity to look at how we might develop the club, and key to this is to make sure that we are doing what you, our members want. To help us plan, we’ll be sending a short survey to you soon, and we’d be really pleased to receive your feedback.

I look forward to seeing you at an NYC event soon, and I wish you all a great boating season ahead.

Skills Forum - 21st April 2021

The next Skills Forum will be on the Sailhaven project https://www.sailhaven.org/ which is a fantastic local community project based in Newhaven.

The team are restoring a 1961 wooden yacht, with the aim of getting more people into sailing.

The project manager, Fred Laloux will tell us all about the project.

We hope to see you there - it will take place on Wednesday 21 April at 7.30pm.

Please let Graham know by email to commodore@newhavenyc.org.uk if you'd like to attend and we will send you the invite details for the Zoom meeting nearer to the time.

Eastbourne Rally

Our Eastbourne Rallies have always been very well attended and are a great chance to get together.

Due to the current restrictions, we have had to defer the Eastbourne Rally until the late May Bank holiday weekend – Saturday 29th May 2021.

High water at Eastbourne 12:29 (7.6m).  Details to follow.

Subject to Covid-19 restrictions

Buddy Sailing

There's some good news about the buddy scheme, and some not so good news, too.

First, the good news. We've looked carefully at the Government's guidelines, and taken additional guidance from the RYA. We've concluded that we are able to re-open the buddy sailing scheme. With the summer just around the corner, the timing is excellent.

The only recommendation we would make is that skippers and crew avoid congregating down below. Of course, skippers and crew are entitled to do whatever they deem keeps them safe, within the usual constraint that, ultimately, the skipper must be in charge.

Now for the not so good news. Of the small group of buddy skippers who are the most active in terms of inviting buddies to go sailing, we currently have some with boats awaiting repairs, and some with personal

issues that will curtail their sailing activities. Your committee is very keen to see the buddy scheme flourishing again, but we have to acknowledge that it will take time, and we ask for your patience, please.

If you have any questions or concerns, do please contact me.

Russell Simpson

Dear Members of Newhaven Yacht Club

On behalf of Simpson Marine and the family I wish to thank all the members for your extremely kind and generous donation to the Bishopstone Church Fund on behalf of Russell.

Russell always enjoyed the company of your members and he goes back a long way with many of them. As a family it has been a very difficult time coping with his loss and your messages of condolence and support have been a great comfort.

Kind regards

Aran Simpson
